Welcome to Middle America

Richfield, Utah – It’s our second stop of the day as we are on our way to Cedar City, Utah where we will spend the night on our way to Las Vegas.

This 22-day trip in the United States of America started with a 12-hour trip from Guangzhou, China to Los Angeles, California. From LA, we flew to Salt Lake City then drove to Provo where Jeff attended a reunion of the movers and shakers of Brigham Young University’s volleyball program. We’ve watched a volleyball game, a football game, and attended a family reunion with Jeff’s sisters and respective families (who welcomed the twins and I with hugs, smiles and great food).

Yesterday, we packed our bags and left Provo for a three-day road trip to Las Vegas. We stopped at Salina last night and left at 10:30 a.m. today to drop by a small town called Aurora (yes,Sleeping Beauty’s name) which Jeff first visited when he was 13 years old and first met a Mormon couple, who significantly changed his spiritual and personal life. We went around town to look for the house of the Hale couple and I could feel Jeff’s mounting anticipation to get a glimpse of the house he first saw 44 years ago. Unfortunately, we didn’t find it. We tried the city center but it is not open until 1:00 p.m. The entire town was silent – it’s almost like one of those ghost towns from the set of The Walking Dead .

Leaving Aurora at around 1:00 p.m., we decided to drop by Richfield to purchase baby essentials and a cup of iced coffee for myself (because I am getting drowsy and I shouldn’t be as I need to stay alive and kicking to be Jeff’s cheerleader as he continues to drive in the next three hours).

Driving along the freeway at this very moment, we are surrounded by mountains, trees and blue skies. I just love it! The twins are in their car seats babbling the mutant language I yet have to crack. Jeff is in his most comfortable driving position wearing his favorite pair of sunglasses as James Taylor’s voice filled the air with ‘Your Smiling Face.’

I have more than 200 pages to read for Week 5 of my Master’s degree and I am wondering how on earth I will find time to write this week’s essay on “viewing reading as (a system of) comprehension” and join another group discussion about infant language given our current mobile situation.

But oh well, it can be done.

Meanwhile, the twins are giggling, the sun is shining brighter as we move slowly into the afternoon, and a cool breeze is joining us in our first road trip as a family.

Life is good.

Cedar City, here we come!
