Prayers, questions and answers (My Little Prayers & Kids’ Quest Study Bible)

My Jeff Junior turns eight months old today. My, my… how time flies. Around this time last year, we were in China getting ready for our big move to America. I was still pregnant with JJ.

Now, he’s a bouncy baby boy who is learning to walk and talk following the leads of his older siblings.

We’ve been teaching our children to pray and I’m happy to report that the twins — Nicholas and Antoinette — fold their arms the moment we say “let’s pray”. They also say “Amen”.

When I found these two books in my mailbox, I thought: “What great resources are these books to motivate me to raise children who love to pray, and who love to read about the Word of God and ask questions about the Bible.”

My Little Prayers

My Little Prayers is a handy prayer guide created for children. There are eshort prayers in this book that we, parents, can use as a starting guide for children who can read.

The contents are divided into the following themes:

  • My Day
  • My Mealtime
  • My Bedtime
  • My Family and Friends
  • My Favorite Things
  • My Feelings
  • My Special Days
  • My Time with God

Talk about short, sweet, and simple…

The prayers and quotes were compiled by Brenda Ward featuring classic and modern prayers. The illustrations by Diane Le Feyer set the mood in every prayer and quotes. I love children’s books and these illustrations give me warm, fuzzy feeling because they remind me of value-laden storybooks written by Philippine authors.

Although I said that this will be a good guide for children who can read, I don’t think parents of toddlers and infants need to wait for reading age before they can use this book. The twins and I — with the baby in his crib listening, looking at what we were saying and doing — flipped through the pages of this book as part of our bedtime routine. They pointed at familiar things such as milk, porridge, and dog.

It’s no wonder that this book has already sold more than two million copies.

It helps parents guide children in discovering the power of prayers.

Kids’ Quest Study Bible

This one comes in hardcover with an interesting cover design because it doesn’t look like any traditional covers of Bible-related resources.

The cover looks like a trivia book; the kind that young learners consult for questions under the general knowledge category. This book provides answers to over 500 questions about the Bible.

It presents the book from the Old Testament and the New Testament in child-friendly language. I love that the inside pages are in red and blue font. It deviates from the regular black text and is successful in doing so as it provides a different look to the entire book.

Every book in the Old and New Testaments are introduced before the start of the very first verse. Here’s a look on the Book of Genesis:

Many of these questions are also asked by adults like you and me so if you find yourself without answers to some questions, this book may give you the answer(s) you’ve been looking for.

I love how the questions are straightforward and direct. The answers are short and concise with reference to a Bible verse and replete with fun illustrations like the one below:

I remember being part of a four-student team to participate in a Bible Quiz Bee during my high school days. I’ve spent a lot of time reading the Bible and cramming names of people, events and happenings, and verses and chapters in my brain weeks prior to the Quiz Bee. Study time would have been more efficient if this was out around that time (the year 1999).
