It was March 2011 and I was on my fifth month of being an Inquirer Read-along volunteer. Rosario “Ruth” Chua, chief librarian of the Cebu City Public Library (CCPL), whom I have interviewed in my previous work with Cebu Daily News told me in one of my visits that CCPL will be celebrating its 92nd Anniversary on April 2011.
I told her I will ask my editor Connie Fernandez if we can arrange a read-along activity with the library. Connie agreed, and we found ourselves organizing a storytelling session with then Councilor Margot Osmeña and Island Souvenirs founder Jay Aldeguer with daughter, Arianna as storytellers. CCPL, through Mrs. Chua, invited the children-participants from barangay Sambag Uno. Stories read were “Ang Huling Puno” by Richard Reynante and illustrated by Arnold Nuestro); and Ang Kamatis ni Peles by Virgilio S. Almario and illustrated by Renato Gamos.
The storytelling session was co-organized by the Friends of the Cebu City Public Library and the Zonta Club of Cebu 2, where the ever dynamic Miss Chinggay Utzurrum is a member.
