This sounds like a title to our storybook — and that’s because it is.
Or to be clear about it, it WILL be.
Our youngest son, Jeff Junior, is obsessed about firefighters, firetrucks, fire engines.
I am sure he got this from his older brother, Nicholas, who learned about different jobs that people do from the book, Ang Pambihirang Sombrero (The Amazing Hat) by Jose Miguel Tejido.
Read my review of Ang Pambihirang Sombrero here.
There was a plan to take him to a fire station but I did not have the time to actualize that plan. JJ was content in playing with fire trucks and watching movies with firefighters in them. We passed by the fire station in the town of Consolacion on our way to Cebu City and JJ would jump to his feet to point it out to us. He is three years old so when he utters “fire truck,” the delivery comes with a dash of cuteness and awesomeness.
On February 22, I was about to go out for an errand when Imui asked my husband, Jeff, to join me. JJ cried and did not want me to leave so I said that he can come with us. From the bank where I had a quick transaction, the plan was to walk to the nearest Jollibee, another brand favorite of the Ruffolo mutants. JJ was bent on having chicken joy, rice, and a toy for this adventure.
But guess what station we passed by before we got to Jollibee?
The Consolacion Fire Station with two blazing red firetrucks parked right infront of the office!!!
JJ’s eyes opened as big as a grapefruit!
He was still whimpering that time as an aftermath of the tantrum he threw inside the bank. But the moment he saw the firetruck, the boy’s face lit up and he was transported to paradise.
“How in the world is this possible?” he might have thought.
“I got super, giant, big, red firetrucks Mommy!” he exclaimed as attempted to step into one. His Daddy stopped him from doing so. We went inside the office as JJ was looking for a firefighter. One man said he is a firefighter. “But where’s your fire proximity suit?” our boy asked in his high-pitched voice.
The man shook his head.
The two persons inside the office were friendly but they were quite busy so we had to take JJ out of their office. He did not like that. He was waiting for the “firefighter in fire proximity suit” to show up.
He was crying when we told him we needed to get out. Luckily, they had a display of pictures outside so we were able to show those to JJ. He completely forgot about the chicken joy and the toy and made no mention about rice as he was pointing out to the fire hose. He explained to me that the fire hose is attached to a fire engine. I did not understand the rest of his explanation except for the part when he said that the fire hose needs to hang dry after use.
As we left the fire station, JJ kept on waving at the firetrucks, promising to return one of these days. He was in between smiling and crying as he was throwing kisses to the red trucks.
Oh, the innocence on his face and the purity in his voice as he vowed to come back and visit the firetrucks again very soon.
