Not everyone likes to eat their greens. But…if you drink them, it might just work.
I first heard of wheatgrass when I was working as a reporter for a community newspaper in Cebu, Philippines. My colleagues and I were passing by a wheatgrass kiosk inside a mall when we got curious about the taste of the green drink which the lady was offering for a free taste.
The appearance is not anywhere close to inviting but the color – uhm, like algae in water – and the promise of good health and wellness were enough to entice us to take a sip.
Not bad, said my friend Lorraine when she tried it. I tried too and it was okay except for the grassy, fibrous texture. It was sweet making the grassy taste tolerable.
But it was not attractive and tasty enough to convince me to trade my kalamansi and watermelon slush for it.
That was the last day I heard and tasted wheatgrass. It was 2008.
Three weeks ago, I was invited by Moms Meet, under its bloggers program, to try out Amazing Grass Green Superfood. That’s seven years since my first grass encounter. The curious explorer that I am said “yes”. I got the box a day after I came back home from childbirth.
Breastfeeding concerns
The box contained a tote bag, a shaker cup, a gift card, and seven single serve packets of Amazing Grass Green Superfood in different flavors (original blend, orange dream, pineapple-lemongrass with multivitamin boost, energy watermelon, chocolate infusion, berry, and ORAC antioxidant boost).
But it took me a while to open the box because I didn’t want to jump into a sampling mood without making sure that the product is safe for me and my newborn child since I am breastfeeding.
The past 12 days following my discharge from the hospital was also pretty tough. Any Mom knows this: very little sleep because the newborn’s timezone is different from mine, sore nipples, and twin toddlers demanding that I sing nursery rhymes at 7:30 a.m. just when I’m about to get my much needed rest.
Things settled down a little bit on the 13th day so I called my doctor’s office, gave them the details about Amazing Grass, and the nurse told me everything looks healthy. There might be a change in the taste of my breastmilk but if I only drink one glass a day, she said there shouldn’t be any significant changes.
With the “go” signal from my healthcare provider, I started my Amazing Grass adventure.
Right mixture
Do not, and I mean this, do not mix this with cold, infused water or you’ll end up wasting a fine product.
I love infused water and that morning, I just made orange water. I thought maybe the orange flavor would go well with it but to my dismay, it didn’t. As expected, the drink turned green in color and the texture, well, grassy.
The following day, I tried the chocolate flavored superfood, which I mixed with my hot chocolate. And… yep! I hit the jackpot! It was tasty and it made me feel great knowing that there is some green in that yummy drink.
Because of my orange drink blunder, I learned that I like this product on hot water. I’m Asian who believes in the balance of the yin and the yang so I love my warm and hot drinks. I tried the original flavor with another cup of hot chocolate during my midnight snack and it also blended well with this comfort drink.
My favorite though is the pineapple-lemongrass flavor mixed with hot water because it’s a great midday mood booster. My hormones are pretty crazy these days so I usually have some hot drink in the middle of the day to lift me up. Until this pineapple-lemongrass discovery, I’ve been loyal to lemon and spearmint steeped in hot water. Now, I have another option.
Health benefits
This superfood is not for everyone. The appearance may seem revolting to some but if you know how to mix and match them with several ingredients from your kitchen, you’ll discover several ways to enjoy your greens.
Amazing Grass’ website provides recipes on how you can enjoy their products in a variety of ways.
The website says this superfood delivers three full serving of fruits and vegetables. The products are non-GMO, gluten-free, organic, vegan and naturally aids digestion and body alkalinity.
I’m now interested to try out their energy bars as I get back in living an active lifestyle that involves dancing and running.
