Comic books teach kids how to take care of animals (PETA Kids Comic Books)

Since when did comic books become the medium to teach kids how to take care of animals? Well, perhaps when people realize that adults cruel to animals did not learn how to be kind to furry creatures when they were younger.

In this project meant to reach the young audience, the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animal, more commonly known as PETA, published a collection of four comic books retelling the life stories of dogs, cows, rats, elephants, chicken, and fish, and the ways by which children can be involved in taking care of them.

Our family received four printed copies of the comic books (dog, chicken, cow, rat) last year when PETA Kids announced that they are sending free copies of the comic books. I immediately signed up because I saw the need for my children to grow up as individuals who value and respect all life forms. They are growing up in a property where there are dogs and cats, whom we treat as family members, not as pets. I believe it is important that we teach our children to be kind to animals because that will also teach them patience and love. If you are living in the USA, you can order the free printed copies here. However, PETA Kids noted that these comic books are on back order so you might have to wait a little bit to receive your free copies. You can also check out these comic books on Amazon.

If you are not based in the US, worry not. You can still have access to these awesome comic books. Click this link right here, and it will bring you to the comics section of the website. You can view and read the comic books there and you can  download them.

Along with the comic books, we also received stickers, which are really cute and fun materials to give to my twins now that I am starting to potty train them. I am not vegetarian or vegan but I agree with most, if not all, of the statements in these stickers. For instance, I love veggie burgers too – and I think it’s really a good way to sneak in vegetables in the diet of the kids. I am even trying to work on a recipe so watch out for that because I will share that here in this blog too. Good news, you can also order the stickers for free if you live within the US!

Just yesterday, my two-year-old son Nicholas asked me to read “A Cow’s Life”, this comic book tells the story about how cows are treated naturally versus factories. It is a very informative book that also tells about where leather comes from and names companies (e.g. Vans, Reebook, Diesel, Timberland) which do not use leather as materials in their products.

My favorite among the four is “A Chicken’s Life” because back in the Philippines, I spent seven years of my life in a home where we raised chickens. We let them roam around our backyard and it was really fun seeing them building their nests and laying their eggs on them.

My deepest gratitude to the editorial team that made these PETA Kids comic books a reality. Oh, lest I forget, the PETA Kids website can be an excellent source of games and activities for your youngsters. It has games, videos, activities, quizzes, photos, and even food recipes for those who want to know and learn about vegan nutrition.

So… get copies of these comic books and allow yourself and your children to learn more. Learning new things is fun!
