Nine months ago, Dr. Sarah Gordon lost her husband Harry and two-year-old daughter Jenny in a car accident. Then, a stalker attempted to burn her house, took a shot at her, and left her threatening messages that left her with no choice but seek various forms of protection.
In between her struggles to continue practicing her profession and staying alive, Sarah stopped communicating with God and managed to live each day asking herself when the pain will disappear. Medical Judgment, written by Dr. Richard L. Mabry, is a faith-laden medical suspense novel on rediscovering independence and regaining self confidence.
At the helm of this story is the woman doctor and protagonist, Dr. Sarah Gordon, who have mostly leaned on men friends and authorities to protect her from her stalker. The novel explored Sarah’s retransformation and how she, although not without fear and hesitation, faced her life’s challenges with the strength of a decisive woman fully aware of her capabilities.
Note that this novel has a pastor as one of its main characters so if you feel uncomfortable reading a material with frequent association to a faith or religion, this novel may not be for you.
One noteworthy point in this novel though is the author’s way of bringing out the humanity in each character. You know these people from the people you work with, your neighbors, your friends. While Sarah is the primary character in this story, the rest of the characters in Medical Judgment play pivotal roles in the development of plot.
While I appreciate that Sarah was able to move on at the end of the story, the sort of wish you want to throw her way after everything she has been through, the story’s ending is not as exciting as it started. I was not surprise when the identity of the stalker was revealed because there were several clues and hints thrown in the early chapters of the story as to the person responsible for Sarah’s difficulties.
There were a couple of circumstances that did not see any closure at the end of this novel. Without revealing too many details, one instance involves Sarah’s suspension from the hospital and the future of her career. She was suspended and then…? Then there are questions on the men of her lives… what ever happened to them? I feel that the love/attraction/infatuation sub-theme of this novel was a bit of a stretch so suffice it is to say that I was not too happy about this angle.
Would I recommend this to other readers?
Maybe yes.
I like how the author presented medical emergencies and scenes inside the emergency room. These scenes showed the courage, decisiveness, and fortitude of the people working in the emergency rooms.
Otherwise, I don’t think Medical Judgment will be part of the novels-you-should-read-in-your-lifetime list.
