You may not know this but the Center for Disease Control (CDC) actually gives away free copies of a book that can serve not only as a storybook for children but also as a guide for parents to check on our children’s developmental milestones. The book is published in English and Spanish and revolves around the world of an amazing kangaroo named Joey and the amazing things he is doing now that he is three years old.
Entitled “Amazing Me: It’s Busy Being Three”, the story is told with a distinctive rhyme and rhythm and is done so for fun and easy reading time. Written by Julia Cook and Dr. Laura Jana and illustrated by Allison Valentine, Amazing Me is a book that parents can take with them during well-child visits as it provides a comprehensive checklist of our children’s developmental milestones.
Think about all the cognitive, emotional, and physical milestones you’re supposed to look out for in your child. There are so many of them, it’s overwhelming. This book saves you the hassle of reading too many resources and printing out confusing lists. This book creatively simplified parenting for you, in a way. Check the list at the end of the story along with tips for parents on how we can help our children learn and grow.
Amazing Me starts with an instruction for parents and caregivers in navigating their way throughout the book. For each developmental milestone, a milestone moment is written as a star note. For example:
I particularly like how the authors put in the characters of the mother, father, and teacher to “tame” Joey who was starting to think that he can do anything he pleases because he is a star. It sets the example on how to appropriately use words in dealing with children in different situations.
